The board of Coos Curry Electric Cooperative launched Beacon Broadband during a ceremony May 2.

Brent Bschoff, CEO OF Beacon Broadband, speaks during a ribbon cutting to officially launch the Internet service in Brookings.

High-Speed Fiber internet is up and running in Brookings after Beacon Broadband officially “flipped the switch” on the new lightning speed broadband network at a ribbon cutting ceremony at Barron’s Home Furnishings in Brookings.

The ribbon cutting ceremony held May 2 was the culmination of more than three years of work by Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative, Beacon Broadband and its partners to build the first sections of the network.

When complete, the fiber-to-the-home project will make access available to approximately 19,000 homes and businesses in the Coos and Curry counties.

Over the next three years, construction will move north, ensuring local residents on the south coast of Oregon can get equitable, high-speed connectivity as good as or better than the region’s urban counterparts.

“Beacon Broadband will bridge the digital divide that exists right here in Curry and rural Coos Counties. But it will do much more than that. It will be a locally owned and controlled asset to  help bring economic, educational, and social vitality to the south coast for decades to come with the same quality, reliability and affordability we get from the electric coop.” said Beacon Broadband Board President, Pete Radabaugh.

Beacon Broadband’s fiber-optic network will offer access to symmetrical upload/download multigigabit internet capabilities - among the fastest and most robust in the nation. In addition, the network will provide unmatched reliability with redundant paths to ensure customers stay connected.

The newest service in town also offers a distinct experience over competitor networks including free professional installations, free equipment, and a managed Wi-Fi service, with no data caps for all customers.

Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative Board President Jim Kolen said, “We looked at the broadband project from every angle over two and a half years of feasibility study and planning.

A large federal grant tipped the scale and made it possible. More than 100 rural electric coops across the country successfully serve broadband to their members – now we do too.”
